Kinnerley was a stop on the Shrophire and Montgomeryshire Railway, which before World War II was part of Col Stephens' 'empire', along with the Kent & East Sussex and the Weston, Clevedon & Portishead lines. The Shropshire line was taken over by the War Department in 1941 and was operated by the military until closure in 1960. Hunslet 0-6-0 'Austerity' saddle tanks were the main source of motive power after the war and there appear to be at least three of these engines in this photograph: a fourth may be lurking in the shed, centre. Nearby was a large bomb storage depot

Kinnerley Depot MOD War Department Civilian Division, Shropshire and Montgomeryshire Railway (The old Potts line) Which ran from Shrewsbury (Abbey Station) to Llanymynech in just under 100 years the line opened and closed three times was operated by five different companies, one of which never ran public trains and lay dormant for three decades
War operations over the line began in June 1941, on nationalisation in 1948 the line passed into joint WD and BR control and remained so until 1960 when in February of that year WD traffic ceased. BR assumed responsibility for demolition which was completed in 1962.
