The locomotive is a Hughes 2-6-0 built for the LMS and classified by British Railways as 6P5F; known to many as a 'Crab'. I assume that the freight is heading towards Ayr; the junction with the Ardrossan line is probably beyond the brake van seen on the extreme left. There was a second Kilwinning Station - Kilwinning East, on a Caledonian Railway branch, which also ran to Ardrossan, but I understand this was closed circa 1930

There was indeed a second station in Kilwinning called Kilwinning East this station sat where the Cornerstone church and Caley House now sit (Caley House being an obvious reference to the site of the old station) the only remainder of the old Caley line is a viaduct to the north of the town , the original station having closed in 1932 and been demolished in 1955 although boat trains through to Ardrossan continued to use the line until 1947 , a picture exists of this station I use it as my screensaver just google Kilwinning East Station. All the best. James.
