Bristol, Canon’s Marsh gas works

This quayside gas works was first established in 1816 and was in operation until 1936. It remained undeveloped through much of the 20th century: remediation issues concerning contaminated land may have delayed any new use for the site, which stands roughly opposite the SS Great Britain’s dry dock.

Beyond stand two large multi-storey warehouses, since demolished. Lloyds TSB Bank now has its head office building on or near the site of the further block. In the distance, left, is the tower of St Mary Redcliffe. Below it, on the far left, can be seen the Bush warehouse, now serving as the Arnolfini Gallery.
