Skipton c1960sPhoto of a steam locomotive pulling into or leaving Skipton Railway Station, North Yorkshire, England. Skipton is also known as the 'Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales'.
Skipton station was originally opened by Leeds and Bradford Extension Railway in 1847. It has moved in 1876 and has seen platforms added and taken away during its 163 years existence. Currently (2010) Skipton has 4 platforms.
The locomotive 45569 is a London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Jubilee Class (I think). It has a full tender and is heading a passenger train.

The railway at Skipton is now electrified, as evidenced by John Illingworth's shot of the station on Geograph: www.geograph.org.uk/photo/249752

Skipton. This must be the west end of the station as Ben Brooksbank's shot of the Thames-Clyde express is taken looking eastwards, clearly at the other end: www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2242257

Skipton. Perhaps this 1983 view is taken from the same bridge, but the angle gives a better overall view of the station:
