I'd hazard a guess at the date as 1955-1957; certainly in the British Railways era. The engine carries the lion and wheel symbol on its side tank and 50746 is a BR number. The locomotive is a 2-4-2T designed by Aspinall for the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway; the first of the class was steamed in 1889. 50746 was one of the last three survivors, extant in 1960 but withdrawn by 1963. Network Rail engineers would probably find all that pointwork, especially the crossovers, a bit forbidding today! The London Street excursion platform edge looks relatively recent, with its concrete structure

This is Terry Damen's shot of the station, taken in 2007, and to be seen on the Geograph site. As I suspected the trackwork has been greatly simplified! www.geograph.org.uk/photo/473726
Southport, on the coast, to the north of Liverpool, served that city and lines also ran to Wigan and Preston. It was originally one of the main hubs of the Lancashire and Yorkshire 'empire'
