Train to Dundee in 1965

Referring to Bill Brown's comments on picture #1813; I had no idea the Scottish Caprotti Standard 5s were shedded at Leeds beforehand.
This is 73154 leaving Glasgow's Buchanan Street Station in June 1965 with the 6.15pm to Dundee.
There were 10 of these allocated to St Rollox shed in Glasgow and they put up some fine performances on Glasgow to Aberdeen trains and could hold their own on a 3 hour schedule if deputising for an LNER Pacific.
73154 was built at Derby and entered traffic in June 1957 having a very short life being withdrawn in December 1966.

Hi Again Pal. Thanks for posting the picture. Apparently some of these were based at Patricroft (Manchester) and Rowsley. Where is Rowsley? I heard that these were good steamers once the crews got used to them. Bill

Hi Bill, Rowsley is north of Derby, the shed was a four road through type building.

Thanks Peter. Anybody know what their duties were from there? Bill Brown

Hi Guys, Rowsley is the current northern limit of Peak Rail. Just this year they have been allowed into Matlock proper as their new southern limit. The aim now is Bakewell and then Buxton but that may take a year or two. A photo of the new turntable at Rowsley can be seen on train-photos.com picture 12150.
The 5MT Standards were all over the place from Perth and Polmadie to Chester and Patricroft, not forgetting Shrewsbury, Sheffield and Derby.
73154 was built after my combined, 1955/6, was printed.

Hi Again John S. When I mentioned Patricroft and Rowsley I was referring to the Caprotti '5's. Yep, St. Rollox had 73145-73154. I thought I saw 73154 in 1956 but it must have been 1958. 73154 was introduced in 1957. I don't know why it was in South Wales but I remember my mate Terry and myself got highly excited when it pulled into Neath, especially as we travelled behind it. I THINK we were going to Cardiff. I remember it was a warm summer's day. I never saw a Caprotti '5' after that. Happy times!

Or has it been "Dollied-up" Paul? Lots of steam leaks from the front end and smear marks on the tender sides. Last run somewhere? Just a thought.

Just through Cowlairs for overhaul.

Shame really, only 18 months later gets scrapped. What a waste!

Hi Again Paul. After a bit of research by Peter Williams it turns out that it must have been 73134 that I saw at Neath, not 73154. 73134 was shedded at 84G Shrewsbury not 55A. I must have had a Senior Moment. You must get them too! It wasn't unusual to see 84G locos. in South Wales in the Summer months but usually Counties or Modified Halls. They might have worked through via Hereford and Newport on a Summer only service. Cheers, Bill B.
