Comments:
One of 14 locos bought by the Southern Railway from the War Office in 1946. Many more were built for the US Army Transportation Corps in 1942-3. Builders included Vulcan Iron Works, Pennsylvania and H K Porter of Pittsburgh.
The Southern found use for these locos in Southampton Docks. Problems occurred with the steel fireboxes; they deteriorated rapidly and had to be replaced.
30073 was later based at Eastleigh; it was withdrawn from there at the end of 1966. It was not preserved. Four examples were - two went to the Kent & East Sussex, one to the Bluebell and one to the Keightley & Worth Valley Railway.
