72009 CLAN STEWART at Glasgow St Enoch heading the 5.30pm to Carlisle in May 1963.
The poor relation of the Britannias, only 10 out of 20 were built. However there is apparently a scheme to build a new loco in the same vein as the A1 Tornado.

Comments:
The build is underway. The "new" Clan will be numbered 72010 and named "Hengist"

Interesting. The original 72010 was to have been Hengist, 11 Horsa, 12 Wildfire, 13 Canute if I remember correctly. They were for the Southern.

An alleged poor steaming class - this is the first picture I have seen with a 'feather' at the safety valves.
A reduced Britannia - which did not really work - in the manner that the Manors being a reduced Grange failed too (initially).
Despite the 6MT rating many drivers preferred Black 5's to them...
Odd choice for a new loco on that basis...

Maybe the faults will be corrected in the newbuild. Look at how Duke of Gloucester was improved.

Very True Paul - saw DoG belting along the mainline a couple of years ago - Wow!.
Even the essentially 'right first time' A1 Tornado has had some useful updates - I believe...

There are some suggestions, like the LNER 2-8-2 P2, which verge on the silly, mind you they probably would have worked on the GNR mainline, just not the twisty Aberdeen Road....

Yes Paul, the 'Duke' had 'Built-in' faults. The major one I believe was something to do with the 'Timing' of the Caprotti valve-gear, and also a discrepancy was found in the design or build of the Ash-pan which caused draughting problems. I know a chap here who used to fire it on occasions and he reckoned it was hard work keeping up pressure and water level in the boiler.
