LMS 1117Believed to have been taken in 1938. Location unknown. Fowler 3 cylinder class 4P 4-4-0 No.1117.
I have a number of old LMS negatives most of which the locations are unknown. Any help?
The collection was given to me about 40 years ago.

Is that a Claughton that can be seen be the side of the compound?

I think you may be right, Vaughan. The end of thenameplate is just visible beyond the foot of the compound's smokebox door. I think the location could well be the coaling stage at Kentish Town - see this shot of another 4-4-0 taken in 1928: ... commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Midland_compound_coaling_at_Kentish_Town_shed_(CJ_Allen,_Steel_Highway,_1928).jpg

Apparently the LNWR Claughtons were cascaded from the WCML to the Midland Division from 1927. This followed the introduction of the Royal Scot 4-6-0s. So it would not be surprising to find one at Kentish Town in 1938. But not much later, as all bar 6004 Princess Louise had been withdrawn by the end of 1939. Presumably during the 1930s they were ousted from the Midland lines by Stanier's Jubilee and Black Five 4-6-0s? Incidentally the coaling stage seen here may have been replaced after World War II with one or two of those concrete tower structures

One of the left hand drive Compounds with reduced Chimney height.
I'd say Kentish Town too - but there is an open aspect to the site - which does not fit with the Kentish Town site...

Can I thank the experts? It would seem to be Kentish Town. I can confirm the engine behind the compound is a Claughton althouth the original negative is not quite sharp enough to make out the letters on the nameplate.
I think the responses to my query have proved just how valuable this web site is.
Hopefully other pictures will be placed on this site. I have E-Mailed 2 more.

The slightly ghostly image of an ancient - ? half cab - 0-6-0T can be seen behind the 4-4-0's tender; this small loco was no doubt shunting coal wagons onto (or from) the upper deck of the coaling stage
