V2 steam locomotiveSee caption/comments of picture #2163. Bill: this is the V2 that you were hauled by on part of your trip. Must have been just after, I took the shot on Dundee shed, wondered why it was so clean & painted buffer faces. (June 1966).
Built at Darlington in Sept. 1937.
Withdrawn Nov. 1966.
Scrapped Jan. 1967.

An Aberdeen Ferryhill stalwart which was used on lots of tours and indeed headed the BR sponsored Last V2 in december 1966.

Um..Possible Pete. I have a photo of 60813 at Thornton but it doesn't look that clean. I didn't see the buffers. The train was supposed to go through to St. Andrews and I don't know what the Motive Power arrangements were there. 60813 might have been the designated loco to run light there from Thornton. Dunno!

Ta for your comment Paul. Obviously I didn't know where the Loco was allocated but going by the performance put up that I remember it was keen to get home! The only run I have had behind a V2. Great stuff and I think it made up some lost time.

Of course it made some time up Bill, it had three cylinders to go at, and it was a green 'un! Painting buffers white was frowned upon by our Shedmaster at Doncaster, rightly so I think, polished bare metal looking better following buffering up to other vehicles.

Just a couple of Queries here Paul S and Peter W. Your withdrawal dates differ. Also Paul, in Peter's photo the shed code seems to be 62B which was Dundee. Might have been it's last shed.
Yes Tony, 60813 did have 3 cyls. and so did the Jubilee and the MN. I don't know why the MN was rated 8P and the V2 7P6F because the V2 was actually more powerful than the MN. Same size wheels but a very slightly larger bore but a 2" longer stroke. The Jubilee was behind them by a fair bit. The only locos that really 'put in' on the trip were 4472, 60813 and the two J37's. I can't speak for Kingfisher because I slept from Aberdeen to Newcastle I think.I don't think Grannie Smith Green had anything to do with it because apart from 4472 the J37's were black and you couldn't tell what colour 60813 was. In all fairness I must say that I don't think the Jubilee was up to scratch. It didn't seem to have the 'bark' or 'crackle' from memory. Also, I feel that something wasn't right with 35026. It seemed to struggle for steam when needed but did blow off in Manchester. On the way back the 9F came on at Dudley to assist over the bank near there so there must have been a problem with steam. It wasn't an exceptionally heavy train, only 10 bogies so the MN should have handled it easily. I concede victory to NB and LNER!
