One of the longest names for a BR steam loco,SIR EUSTACE MISSENDEN SOUTHERN RAILWAY, Bulleid Battle of Britain Pacific 34090 was built at Brighton entering traffic in February 1949. It was named after the last General Manager of the Southern Railway, a post he took up in 1941 and guided the SR through the War Years particularly the traffic to Southampton and other South Coast docks in preparation for D-Day.
He became the first Chairman of the Railway Executive on Nationalisation and passed away in 1973 at the grand old age of 86.
34090 was rebuilt in 1960 and had a very short life in that condition being withdrawn at the end of Southern steam in July 1967.
This was taken at Basingstoke in April 1965.
