Busy at Anstruther

Loco 64618 at Anstruther, 25th June, 1966. 64570 is in the front. After turning the Loco's will return the Warwickshire Railway Society's "Aberdonian" Special to Thornton Junction. Note that both Loco's have late BR tender logos. They certainly weren't short of steam on the trip and the crews obviously loved the experience going by the performance between Edinburgh and Thornton.

I'd love to know what the laddie in the light coloured jacket was trying to do at the rear of the tender? Was he attempting to lift it (no, his legs aren't bent enough), or maybe he was after the back handrail! Answers on a postcard to win this week's cream bun prize.

Looks like a case of "never mind the quality, feel the width".
Perhaps he's from the scrapyard measuring up to check actual dimensions against published ones, for when the loco comes to be disposed of?

There was a phase - certainly in the early 70's of using paper pressed against worksplates then rubbing over with a pencil from the other side - et voila - you have a scale size impression of a worksplate
