I've tried find out more on the Continental Hotel, on the left, and on the column that is in the middle of the road in the back. But no luck, maybe this part was unlucky in WWII? Anyone any better ideas?

I assumed that was Nelson's Column. Is it not?

Doesn't look the same.... There seems to be only a very narrow connection between this column and the statue ('Nelson' himself, if it is him) on this photo. The Nelson column however is different.
I've flicked through dozens of photos on Google Images and other sites like www.essential-architecture.com/LO/LO-065.htm .
But it really seems different.

It turns out this isn't London at all. The street sign on the right says "Rue de Rivoli". It's Paris!

I believe this to be the Column Vendome - 44 metres high - which is comprised of a stone core, encased in the bronze of 1250 cannons captured at the Battle of Austerliz (1805). It was designed by Denon, Gondouin, and Lepère and modelled in the style of Trajan's Column in Rome. It was constructed during 1806 - 1810, The spiral bronze bas-relief was created by Bergeret.
Originally a statue of Napoléon a Caesar was placed on top. This was replaced by a likeness of Henri IV which was removed during the 100 Days (1815) when Napoléon returned from Elba and attempted to regain power. Afterwards Louis XVIII installed an enormous fleur-de-lys, but Louis-Philippe restored Napoléon in military uniform.

During the Commune in 1871, a group of Communards led by Gustave Courbet the artist, tore down the column. Rather than pay for its re-erection, as he was ordered, Courbet died (1877) in exile in Switzerland. During 1873 - 1874, the column was re-established at the center of Place Vendôme with a copy of the original statue on top.
