I am not sure whether we would be able to recognise today's Dresden when comparing it with this pre WWI photo. Dresden suffered a lot from bombing raids in World War II and over 40 years as a Soviet bloc state (East Germany) must have left big scars on the city.

The building on the left is the Hofkirche (Cathedral) and the bridge over the river Elbe is the 'Augustusbrucke' (August Bridge).

I've not been able to find more details on the other buildings (including the tower in the back) though....

I found a contemporary photo of Dresden from a similar vantage point. Much of the city was rebuilt on the same plans. The opera house in the center is recognizably restored, as well as the cathedral. The rebuilt bridge is somewhat different. I'm curious about the interesting tower in the background at right. I haven't been able to find anything identifying it or its function.
