my grandfather was a fireman (stoker) on the Montrose at the time of Dr Crippens arrest. His name was Benjamin John Griffiths. Is ther any record available, of the crewmembers names?

When I was nine years old I travelled from Montreal to Southampton via Cherbourg on this ship. My mother and her father accompanied me. As I can recall, it was exciting.

This can't be a photo of the SS Montrose referred to by Mr. Larson. He clearly states that the Montrose had only one "funnel".

The picture of the ship Montrose is the SS Montrose (2) . The SS Montrose 1 was built in 1897 and I have been unable to find a picture of the first ship. My grandfather came from Norway to Liverpool and then to Quebec and we are able to find ship manifest but not a picture of the ship itself. Only the Montrose 2 is available. If anyone has a picture of the first one was much smaller and held fewer passengers. You can read about it on Wikipedia.

my great Uncle Frederick Oswald Vickery (born 1913) was on the ship for Quebec. He was born in Cardiff, Wales.

My great-grandfather Daniel Patrick Fitzgerald (originally from Limerick, Ireland) came to Montreal on this ship in 1926. Does anyone know if there is a complete list of passengers anywhere?

I was on this ship 1940
when it was sunk 2 December 2.54am
I am 90 years old is there any other survivors or history of events
Added by Larry fryer on 03 May 2010
Ss montrose. In reponse to larry fryer's comment I had hoped to find a reference to the vessel in clay blair's authoritative 'hitler's u-boat war'. But unfortunately the 900-odd page paperback I have only covers the years 1942-1945 [cassell & co, 2000]. Can Mr fryer advise whether the vessel was sunk by torpedo, mine or other means? if a u-boat was responsible then the earlier volume, also by clay blair - 'hitler's u-boat war: the hunters 1939-42' may provide some background

From "The Ship List" web site, specially for survivor Mr. Fryer:
"On 12/9/1939 she was requisitioned by the Admiralty, converted to an Armed Merchant Cruiser and renamed HMS FORFAR. She joined the Northern Patrol, and on 2/12/1940 when on route to meet a convoy from Halifax, and 400 miles west of Ireland, she was hit by a single torpedo fired from the German submarine U.99. Half an hour later she was hit by two more torpedoes, but it was not until she was hit by two further torpedoes that she finally sank at 0500 hours. HMCS ST LAURENT picked up 20 survivors and another 200 were rescued by HMS VISCOUNT and a tramp steamer, but 184 men were lost."

My great uncle was a soul lost on the HMS Forfar on 2nd December 1940. His name was Joseph Heywood and he was 21. I only have one photograph of him in which he is wearing his navy uniform, he was an Able Seaman. Very strangely I feel a very strong connection to him even though I never met him as i was born in 1962. I dont suppose there is anyone who remembers him who survived the sinking.

My mother, when she was 5, and my grandmother went from Southhampton to Montreal on this ship. They came back a year later on the Montcalm. Does anyone know where I can get a passenger list from?
Added by Tina Coleman on 12 January 2011
Message for Tina Coleman. Ancestry.com provides access to some passenger lists for a fee. I'm not clear whether they cover 20th century shipping. Might be worth checking ...
Added by Martin Bodman on 12 January 2011
Thank you Martin, this is a new venture for me trying to track down my relatives. I have been into Ancestry, but its a minefield. I also tried Canadian Pacific but they didn't even answer my message.
