Britannia class 70004 William Shakespeare

The "Golden Arrow" was the name of the Pullman train from London to Dover linking with the cross channel ferries.
The locomotive in this photo is Britannia class 70004 William Shakespeare.
The Brits, as they were known, were introduced in 1951 and replaced the Southern Region's Bullied Pacifics hauling this prestigious train.

Info thanks to John Southall.
Picture Added on 19 December 2007.

Comments

This engine was given a special finish for the 1951 Festival of Britain, with chrome plating on many parts, the copper pipes polished and brass fittings burnished.
By the way, the preceding engines were designed by Oliver Bulleid (Note spelling!)
