Great Western railcar No.19

This is one I know nothing about. It is on a glass slide and was in my late father in law's collection. Any GW afficionados out there any ideas where it was taken. I keep thinking Kidderminster but I'm not certain.

Don't know about no.19 but found in my little train encyclopedia that no.22 is preserved at the Great Western Railway Society depot at Didcot, England.

Hi Lee, you might want to post this photo on the train photos site too, many 'experts' pay that site a visit too. www.train-photos.com

Can't help with the location, but there is further information. W20W, from the same production batch - Swindon, 1940 - is undergoing long term restoration at the Kent & East Sussex. That railway's web site carries an interesting shot showing the structure of these vehicles, together with no 20's history and specifications: www.kesr.org.uk/stock-register/diesel-locomotives/no-20.html

The location for this photo is Brentford Town . It appears to be one of a series of photographs taken for AEC, the makers of the railcar, and portrays cars No 19 and 21 on 18th June 1940 whilst undergoing trials on the Southall to Brentford Town branch . AEC built the chassis and drive unit whilst Swindon works built and fitted out the body . On completion of the bodywork the vehicle was returned to AEC's Southall works for extensive testing and trials, at first on the Brentford Town branch and then on the main line between Southall and Westbury, Wiltshire .An extensive series of pictures of the whole construction were done both at Southall and Swindon, probably for marketing purposes.Car 19 went into GWR service in July 1940 and spent much of its working life based in the Worcester area .In 1944 it was placed on loan with car No 6 to the LNER and was used on services in the Newcastle on Tyne area for some months . No 19 was withdrawn from service in February 1960
