Caledonian Steam Packet Co Duchess of Montrose
Photo of the Caledonian Steam Packet Co Ltd turbine steamship Duchess of Montrose. She was built in 1930 by William Denny & Bros Dumbarton and measured 806GT.
She looked similar King George V in appearance and design and was a popular too. She used to sail from Gourock on the Round the Lochs cruises, via Ayr, Arran and Ailsa Craig. In 1940 she was briefly 'drafted' as a troop ship in the war efforts.
One remarkable incident was that in 1946 she ran onto the rocks at Kirn during a fog. Although not really damaged it took three ships to pull her clear again.
She ended her career in August 1964 and was laid up. One year later she was towed to Belgium (Gent) and was sadly scrapped.
