The station lies on Fen Line from Cambridge to King's Lynn, which is now electrified. This was done during some substantial modifications in the 1990s.

This is a familiar site. I used to catch a steam train from this station daily to attend school, The Perse, In Cambridge 15m away. The photo is looking north away from Cambridge towards Peterborough (NW)and Norwich (E). The signal box in the distance stood guard over the crossing+ gates with an adjacent single story bridge adjoining - still there. The photo is of main platform the station entrance and ticket barrier being obscured by the rolling stock .Northbound. The River Ouse is also close by.My father was manager and engineer to the Ely gas company the works of which was 1/4 mile west. Coal was brought to the rail-head, hand shoveled out of the wagons and a lorry used to move it to the works. See my book "Can you Smell Gas?" by P Staniforth.- see Amazon

I see there is a locomotive attached to the two vans on the platform over on the left but it is too far away to enable identification, except that it is an LNER type. The 'Gentlemen' sign on the right appears to be in the style adopted in the British Railways era
