This station was opened by the Newport Abergavenny and Hereford Rly. About a mile north was Abergavenny junction station which was the exchange point for the heads of the valleys line through the third station, Abergavenny (Brecon Road) toMerthyr Tydfil. Only open space remains at Abrgavenny junction, but the brecon Road site is occupied by a health centre and parts of the route through the town are still traceable. This section utilised the route of a former horse tramway, The Llanvihangel Railway which had been bought by the N.A.& H.and whose route was partly used for its main line.
