Barnstaple Junction Station in 1913Since 1970 known as Barnstaple Railway Station (Devon, England), this photo is from 1913. It is now a terminus on the Tarka line (Exeter - Barnstaple) but before 1970 it was the junction for lines to Ilfracombe and Bideford. The station was opened in 1854 and was run by North Devon Railway. Currently it is managed by First Great Western and I can only assume the site is rather different now....

It is indeed very different now. Basically there is one line in to the main platform and that's it. The branch lines are gone and the place is rather sad. I have several pictures of this station in the 1970s if you are interested.

Barnstaple Junction. See picture #698 for similar views taken in British Railways days, before the radical pruning of lines here. The Pre-grouping date is evidenced by the LSWR horsebox in the siding; the coaches are in that railway's rather strange livery, with salmon-coloured upper bodies. The main goods yard was over to the left, in the distance. That is possibly the roof of the locomotive depot behind the tall signal to the right
