Gresley Class V2 2-6-2 no.60886 on a railtour and bypassing Darlington heading north. Date is 13th November 1965.

The tour was organised by the Warwickshire Railway Society and started in Birmingham. The leg to Darlington was for a visit to North Road Works at Darlington and the train depicted is heading for there.

The engine worked the return Tony. The steam has been emphasised by the coldness of the day, and it was cold even if no frost was can be seen!

Cold weather even more reason not to turn out the loco with such a blow on the middle 'un Chris. Our Doncaster men would have required a quick 'put-right' by the Fitters before going off-shed.

I can't recollect the state of the return of the engine Tony as the light was appalling then! Maybe by this date it was a case of there being no alternative so make do as best you can. I know some the the loco's I photographed at the end of steam in the north east were in a shocking state.

V2s just never looked right with the smokebox numberplate mounted above the handrail. It changed the whole 'face' of the loco.
